The LGMF was inspired and named after Leul Girmay. Leul Girmay (SOS HGIC Class of '97) was welcomed and cared for by the SOS Children's Village in Mekelle, Ethiopia when he was only 5 years old. Leul had a happy childhood in SOS Mekelle and was chosen to attend SOS-HGIC in the early years of the school. Upon completing IB, he went on to graduate with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering from Columbia University in NY and MBA from Adelphi University in NY before his untimely passing just days after his MBA graduation in 2005. Leul was known for his caring nature and commitment to use his education to help the people he left behind in Ethiopia and Africa. Following his untimely passing, his fellow SOS HGIC alumni in collaboration with his two sisters formed a charitable organization for the purpose of remembering his legacy and achieving his dream.

The Leul Fund the past few years completed the Leul Girmay Library and Computer Resource Center in Tema, Ghana, the Leul Girmay Educational Center in Mekelle, Ethiopia and more recently the Leul Girmay Library and Computer Lab in Bakoteh, the Gambia. All these three projects comprised of the complete renovation/conversion of rooms in the SOS Children’s Villages and provision of computers, printers, copiers, internet access, desks, chairs, shelves, book cases, books, and air conditioning. The total costs were US$21,000, US$13,000 and US$15,000 for Ghana, Ethiopia and the Gambia projects respectively. The well-equipped libraries and the computer resource centers are currently serving the reading, research and computer education needs of the more than 380 children living in the SOS Children’s Villages and Youth Homes. We currently in the process of fundraising for The Leul Girmay Youth Digital Hub, in Mombasa, Kenya. We hope to complete the project by the end of 2021.
